"I knew this [reading] was important in my life and in my children’s lives, but I didn’t realize how absolutely critical it was until I started researching it."
The American Academy of Pediatrics issued a policy statement in 2015 that said that: more
than 1 in 3 American children start kindergarten without the language skills they need to learn to read.
Reading proficiency by the third grade is the most important predictor of high school
graduation and career success.
And yet approximately two-thirds of children each year in the United States and 80% of those living below the poverty threshold fail to develop reading proficiency by the end of the third grade.
Pediatricians know that when parents read with young children, it is a very personal and
nurturing experience. This experience promotes parent-child interaction and Social-emotional development, and it improves language and literacy skills during this critical period of early brain and child development.
5 TIPS TO READING TO YOUR KIDS
Create a special area- bed, couch, special chair, bean bag… have stuffed animals, special blankets…
Set a consistent time – after breakfast, bedtime, etc. must work w/ your schedule
Make it a “no electronic” zone – banish phones other room-
Read from books...yes, physical books and have a variety
Extra-textual talk – Take time to talk about it.
Bonus – Read children’s books that you love. Share with your children books you loved as a child. This makes a difference.
